LASER TREATMENT FOR FUNGAL INFECTION OF NAILS (ONYCHOMYCOSIS)Fungal nail disease is a serious and contagious health problem which causes pain and various infections.

However, treatment of the fungal infection in nails ensures healthy nail development. Regardless of the treatment modality, clinical improvement of the nail may last for 3-6 months depending on the severity of the involvement.

Laser treatment for fungal infection of nail focuses on the eradicating the fungal infection of the nail. If the patient does not take preventive measures for the fungus after the treatment, the disease may recur on the same or another nail.

The laser beam penetrates the nail bed, and such procedure is repeated 1-3 times at intervals of 2-3 minutes in the same session based on the clinical picture of the fungal infection.

The treatment is applied for one nail in 2 to 4 sessions at one-week intervals. It takes averagely 15-45 minutes depending on the number of nails to be treated.

During the procedure, many patients can feel a feeling of warming and ache in the nail. A mild pain after the procedure is also an expected condition. The treatment is supported with cold air blow and thus, local anesthesia is not needed. It is not necessary to take a rest in the days after the session as there is not any pain or restriction in daily activities. Moreover, the patients can have a manicure or pedicure and apply nail polish after the laser treatment.
